For the Scones

For the Glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar Sweetens and thickens the glaze.
  • 2-3 tablespoons blood orange juice Adjusts the glaze consistency.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups of all-purpose flour, ¼ cup of granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, and ½ teaspoon of salt.
  • Add ½ cup of cold, cubed unsalted butter to the dry ingredients and cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together ½ cup of heavy cream, 1 large egg, 2 tablespoons of blood orange zest, and ¼ cup of blood orange juice until well combined.
  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir gently until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat or roll it into a circle about 1 inch thick.
  • Cut the circle into 8 equal wedges.

Baking

  • Transfer the wedges to the prepared baking sheet, placing them about 2 inches apart.
  • Bake for 15-18 minutes or until the scones are golden brown at the edges.
  • Allow the scones to cool slightly on the baking sheet.

Glazing

  • In a small bowl, whisk together 1 cup of powdered sugar, 2-3 tablespoons of blood orange juice, and 1 teaspoon of blood orange zest until smooth.
  • Drizzle the glaze over the warm scones.

Notes

Ensure your butter is cold to achieve flaky layers. Do not skip the chilling stage before baking. Avoid overworking the dough.
