Ingredients

For the marinade

  • 1.5 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs juicy and tender, these are the perfect canvas for the marinade.
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce adds depth and richness.
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce rounds out the flavors.
  • 2 tablespoons honey providing natural sweetness.
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce lends a unique flavor and complexity.
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar adds a tangy brightness.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced enhances the overall flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder brings warmth and depth.
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil adds a layer of richness.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a bowl, combine hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, minced garlic, Chinese five-spice powder, and sesame oil.
  • Place the chicken thighs in a large resealable plastic bag and pour half of the marinade over the chicken. Seal the bag and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (or overnight).
  • Cover and refrigerate the remaining marinade separately.
  • Remove the marinated chicken from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes.

Cooking

  • Place the chicken thighs on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through.
  • While the chicken is cooking, transfer the reserved marinade to a small saucepan, bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes to thicken.
  • Brush the cooked chicken with the thickened marinade and broil for an additional 2-3 minutes.
  • Remove from the oven and let the Char Siu Chicken rest for a few minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

Choose high-quality chicken thighs for optimal juiciness. Let the chicken come to room temperature before cooking. Skipping the broiling step can result in less caramelization.
