Boiling and Coating Ingredients

Preparation

  • Combine warm water and yeast in a large bowl. Let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  • In another bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt.
  • Gradually add dry mixture to yeast mixture, stirring until cohesive.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth. Place it in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for 1 hour.

Cooking

  • Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  • Boil 8 cups of water. Carefully add baking soda, stirring to dissolve.
  • Divide risen dough into equal pieces, roll into ropes, and twist into pretzel shapes.
  • Boil each pretzel in baking soda water for 30 seconds, then remove.
  • Arrange pretzels on a greased baking sheet, brush with melted butter, and sprinkle with sugar-cinnamon mixture.
  • Bake for 10-12 minutes until golden brown.
  • Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Serve warm with chocolate dipping sauce or vanilla glaze. Keep in mind tips for success: Use warm water, knead well, and don’t overcrowd the baking sheet.
