Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour This forms the backbone of your bagels, providing structure and chewiness.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Adds essential flavor, enhancing the overall taste of your bagels.
  • 1 tablespoon sugar A hint of sweetness that balances the flavors beautifully.
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder Helps your bagels rise slightly, giving them a perfect texture.
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast The magic ingredient that brings life to the dough, ensuring it rises properly.
  • 3/4 cup warm water Creates the ideal environment for the yeast to activate, crucial for a good rise.
  • 1/2 cup Greek yogurt Adds creaminess and tang, making the bagels moist and flavorful.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil Provides richness and prevents the dough from being too sticky.
  • 1 large egg, beaten Used for an egg wash to give your bagels a shiny finish.
  • Sesame seeds (optional) For an extra crunch and nutty flavor that complements the bagels perfectly.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, salt, sugar, baking powder, and active dry yeast.
  • Stir the dry ingredients together until evenly distributed.
  • Pour warm water into the mixture and add Greek yogurt and olive oil. Stir gently until the dough starts to come together.
  • Knead the mixture inside the bowl, then transfer to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Shape the dough into a ball, place it in the mixing bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise for 30-45 minutes.
  • Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 6 equal portions. Roll each into a ball, then create a hole in the center using your thumb.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and bring a large pot of water to a boil.

Cooking

  • Carefully drop the formed bagels into boiling water, boiling for about 1-2 minutes per side.
  • Remove bagels with a slotted spoon and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Brush the tops with a beaten egg and sprinkle sesame seeds if desired.
  • Bake bagels in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  • Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

For added flavor, consider mixing in spices like garlic or onion powder. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to three days, or freeze for longer storage.
